Cumulus Contemporary Art Working Group
Title: Contemporary Art Practice: Connectivity and Creativity in times of Conflict

Context: For this session we have invited 3 International guest speakers from the UK, China and the US. They will share examples of best practice in relation to how they have developed research that connects and sparks creativity in times of conflict through artistic practice. Following their presentations, we will as a group, discuss how these different methodological approaches and artistic endeavours can open up a space for public pedagogy.
Society is being constantly challenged by conflict (global/local), the roles of technology and colour within artistic practice is ever shifting. By reflecting on the artistic research strategies employed by Dr Michael Pinchbeck, Luanne Stovall and Claire Qi. Together, we will aim to shed light on new tactics for sparking creativity in times of conflict.

Guest Speaker: Claire Chenxi Qi is a lecturer and researcher in art history, curating, and media art practice at the EDNA Joint Institute (NACAA) of the China Academy of Art (CAA) in Hangzhou, China.
Claire Chenxi Qi has sixteen years of experience managing international master program in CAA with German and French partners. Currently, she is the program manager of the Art&Technology BA level of NACAA and program manager of the Integrated Design Joint Master program between CAA and EDNA (L’École de Design Nantes Atlantique France). She is the contact person of CAA in Cumulus since 2020. Her VR documentaries won national awards in China. Her research focuses on algorithmic art and media design.

Her presentation for Contemporary Art Working Group in Antwerp Cumulus 2023 is about the algorithmic art and artists in Germany in the 1960s. As a special type of art created by mathematicians, engineers, and programmers, algorithmic art was covered under the bigger concept of computer art. It was and still is a perfect example of art practice in a conflicting context.

Speaker: Dr Michael Pinchbeck, Reader in Theatre, Manchester Metropolitan University, (UK)
Staging Loss: Performing the personal archive in immersive theatre and site-specific audio work.

I am a Nottingham-based writer, director and theatre maker with over 25 years of experience. I co-founded Metro-Boulot-Dodo in 1997. I was commissioned by Nottingham Playhouse to write The White Album (2006), The Ashes (2011) and Bolero (2014), premiering at Nottingham Playhouse before touring Bosnia & Herzegovina and Kosovo supported by the British Council. My work has been selected four times for the British Council’s Edinburgh Showcase. In 2018, I was commissioned by New Perspectives to write and direct a play inspired by Berger and Mohr’s 1967 book, A Fortunate Man, which toured to the Edinburgh Fringe, Singapore Fringe and Theaterszene Europa, Cologne. I have since made A Seventh Man, supported by Arts Council England, New Perspectives, Nottingham Playhouse and Lincoln Performing Arts Centre. I am now making Another Way of Telling, supported by Manchester School of Art and Harrogate Theatre. This project will complete The Berger and Mohr Trilogy.

I have written articles for Contemporary Theatre Review, Dance Theatre Journal, Repertorio, Studies in Theatre and Performanceand Performance Research. My work has featured in Podium, DIY: Do It Yourself and Routledge’s The Twenty First Century Performance Reader (2020) I have published an edited collection for Intellect’s Playtext Series, Acts of Dramaturgy: The Shakespeare Trilogy (2020). My ongoing research explores relationships between dramaturgy and practice-as research. I am interested in the intersections between composed theatre and orchestral theatre and ‘staging scores’, taking musical approaches to dramaturgy and dramaturgical approaches to music. My recent practice-as-research explores the notion of performance as commemoration and how theatre remembers. I have developed an extensive body of work around one-to-one performance and am writing a new publication, Brief Encounters: The politics, poetics and ethics of one-to-one performance.

Speaker: Luanne Stovall. Artist, colour theorist, and educator (University of Texas, Austin, US)
Integrating 21st Century Colour Literacy into Contemporary Art & Design Practices: Artist, colour theorist, and educator Luanne Stovall will share her journey from teaching traditional colour theory in university art and design courses to a new interdisciplinary STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) model for 21st Century Colour Literacy. Call-to-Action: In response to our evolving global challenges, it is essential for educators to provide state-of-the-art skills, tools, and resources for colour literacy training — so students can work together across diverse industries to implement creative, effective, and sustainable solutions.

Deadline to apply/update: 17 February 2023

Background

This call for Cumulus Working Groups (CWG) mobilizes the existing CWGs to update, to defrost some not active at the moment, and also to welcome new ones to start sharing knowledge and best practices.

The 1st ever Cumulus Working Group is X-Files for the development of internationalization. It was founded in April 1998 in Prague Czech Republic during the first Cumulus conference. Over the years, many working groups have been and are active, among those active today are e.g. CWGs are ReVeda for research, Art and Design Teacher Education and Pedagogy, Digital Culture, Leadership and Strategy, Business, Industry and Innovation, Sustainability, Food Think Tank, Textiles and Fashion, Contemporary Art. Please check CWGs here.

What is a Cumulus Working Group?

CWGs are unique open intensive thematic focused groups of voluntary individuals that are experts of a Cumulus member institution willing to present and to share their knowledge and experience in a particular field, discipline, or topic. The group is an action of passionate people among the Cumulus members inspiring them to share and meet ideally online and/or onsite repeatedly during annual Cumulus conferences and under the Cumulus umbrella outside our any other Cumulus activity. The sharing aims to add value to the work of an individual, the home institution but also impacting positively the society and the planet. A CWG functions as a hybrid, but a physical presence, e.g., organizing its meeting also onsite during a Cumulus annual conference is welcomed.

Why this Call?

The aim of the call is also to enable those active already existing CWGs to keep their dynamics going on and inspire them to work also in between of the two Cumulus annual conferences, to clarify some operational in their work and to enable them to share the outcomes where Cumulus website is an important tool. The call may not meet all special features of the groups today, but it gives a general framework understanding the evolution of the groups. The call also inspires new ones to be born.

What is the role of a Cumulus Working Group in Cumulus?

CWGs are fundamental thematic pillars of Cumulus association strengthening the affiliation of the members and the sense of community, sharing knowledge and best practices. The group assures continuity in Cumulus as an evolving process of knowledge development and sharing.

CWGs offer their expertise as a group of people of Cumulus. They can be also invited to be in charge for some activities in collaboration with a Cumulus partner by and with the Cumulus Executive Board and the Secretariat.

CWGs are open, committed bottom-up groups of voluntary individuals of Cumulus member universities
1) enabling to include people from the other Cumulus member institutions or Cumulus partners or any other within the framework the association can provide,
2) interested in assuring diversity in terms of perspectives, background, cultural, expertise and geographical context and equivalent,
3) understanding the importance to include people that are not necessarily attending each Cumulus conference or any other meeting or event organized by the group under the umbrella of the association, as well as being ready to include guests and other contributions e.g. local guests as well as other associations or bodies,
4) serving Cumulus members and others beyond by sharing their meeting and activity outcomes,
5) understanding the activity of the CWG is strongly welcomed also to take place online.
6) not competing or organizing something similar as in the program of Cumulus e.g. taking place during a Cumulus conference or any other action taken by the association via its CEB or secretariat.

What is the structure of a Cumulus Working Group?

CWGs have:
1) a NAME: The CWG has a name as Cumulus “xx” Working Group defined by the group understanding Cumulus Association, Cumulus, is the reference when the group presents.
2) a FOCUS The CWG has its focus with representing a) the goals, b) a plan of outcomes and explaining how the group fits inside Cumulus identity and strategy.
3) OUTCOMES: The CWG has its action plan. Though the group is also ready to take an action also outside its own plan. The request may come by CEB or the secretariat also take place with any partners.
3) a CHAIR:
The CWG has a chair and can have a co-chair under the umbrella of a Cumulus member institution as leader(s) of the group. These person(s) is/are responsible of taking care of the CWG, ensuring its program, continuity with an inclusive attitude.
The group itself decides on its coordination and chairmanship, though Cumulus Executive Board (CEB) and the Secretariat may contribute to a case of any challenge. The group has also other key people regularly working for the CWG. The coordinator/s and the key people constitute the key group.
5) a MENTOR: Cumulus Executive Board may nominate mentor/s for the CWGs, if so, the aim of the mentor is to support the work of the CWG in agreement of the CWG. The CWG mentor can report to CEB. CEB can also welcome mentors from outside its own outreach, though the aim is merely among Cumulus members.

What is not a Cumulus Working Group?

Some examples:
1) “Conversations”; Cumulus conference “slot” called “Conversations” are hosting mainly one-time events and open group meetings that can have the same format of a CWG but don’t assure the same CWG continuity and specific outcome. However, it is possible a CWG can emerge based on these meeting(s) during the Conversations in a Cumulus conference; then it is possible to get a Cumulus Working Group status in collaboration with the secretariat and Cumulus Executive Board.

2) A ”Cumulus Partner Event”: These can be initiatives like DESIS network, IxDA, DOGA Norway, AIGA, DINZ, ADR, ADI, ELIA, CILECT, EIDD, BEDA, WDO etc. in tune with Cumulus vision and strategy, hosted within the Cumulus conferences or outside this agenda enriching the contents offered to the members. They are also entitled to get placement in a Cumulus conference via Cumulus Secretariat in collaboration with the conference host. However, a partner can also collaborate with a CWG for its group meeting or for any other activity with a Cumulus partner and in collaboration with the secretariat and CEB.

How does a Cumulus Working Group work?

Practical and other

1) HOW TO BE ACTIVE

Cumulus conferences
Cumulus secretariat calls for Cumulus Working Groups to organize their meetings during the next Cumulus conference. The CWGs are part of the conference program. The call includes giving a deadline for the
a. CWG meeting topic and the session content.
b. speakers onsite or online.

Any other
Any other meeting of the CWG must also be negotiated and worked out in collaboration with the secretariat. CWG is aware of the hybridity of the meeting and may be partly or fully online by presenting or participation. These details negotiated with the secretariat and the host.

2) WHEN and HOW:

a. It is possible to organize a separate CWG meeting or event outside Cumulus conference annual agenda. If so, it takes place under the umbrella of Cumulus. Organized in collaboration with the Cumulus secretariat.
b. The lengths of a CWG session is 1,5-2 hours per day is the common format e.g. either with am or pm placement in the conference program. On request with the secretariat, the CWG can extended its meeting to max. one (1) day within the conference program. CWG can organize an extra day as pre- or post-conference CWG meeting, though this must be negotiated and organized in collaboration with the secretariat and understanding the resources of the host and the association.

3) DISSEMINATE

When CWGs disseminate, it takes place under the umbrella of Cumulus as the CWG group or in collaboration with a partner. The key tool is Cumulus website where the groups have a space allocated to them. Any other dissemination takes place in collaboration with the secretariat and using Cumulus media channels as the main ones. Another tool is to publish via Cumulus Think Tank publication and go online. If the group has any other idea for dissemination, the group contacts the secretariat for any next step. (Pls. see below the “outcomes”.)
The secretariat may give after the conference/meeting to the CWG a deadline to provide material shared in the Cumulus channels. If the group works, shares etc. in other social media or equivalent tools, the secretariat must have access as one of the administrators.

4) CWG CALLING

A CWG can have for its meeting its own call for papers or proposals. The call must be revised and exercised operatively with Cumulus secretariat. Any further support may be given by CEB.

5) NOT ALONE

General Assembly

The General Assembly or “GA” is the association’s highest shared governance authority and is constituted by representatives of its full member institutions

Cumulus full-members are expected to send their official representative (s) to attend the General Assembly on an annual basis. This is an opportunity for members to approve the main strategic objectives recommended by the President and Executive Board, approve the association’s annual budget, and endorse new institutional members.

Held annually in the 1st quarter of the calendar year, “extraordinary” sessions are held when the association has critical needs for members to vote.

Next General Assembly

May 16, 2024 – Hybrid

Our community will be meeting next in the first quarter of 2024 online and on-site in Budapest, Hungary.

Cumulus Legal Registration

Why the Time is Now

After 30 years of continued growth and success as an unregistered association under the legal framework of its founding host institution, Aalto University, Cumulus is becoming a legally registered association in Finland.

Registration Process & Member Engagement

The legal registration of Cumulus represents an important and necessary milestone. As the association continues to mature into a global academic entity, the registration will bring new opportunities for Cumulus to serve its members.

As a registered association, Cumulus will keep upholding its mission: to be a dynamic forum for knowledge exchange and best practices and a committed advocate for the positive role of designers and artists in shaping a better world.

Registration Process

The legal registration process for Cumulus has required deliberate study, legal consultation and multi-stakeholder member engagement.

Initiated in 2021 and managed by CEB VII, the research and necessary work to prepare the registration culminated with the General Assembly of June 2022 when Cumulus members adopted the Association’s new Amended Statutes required by Finnish Law for Cumulus to register in Finland.

The following priorities guided the consultative work that CEB VII carried out to help transition the Association to legal status:

  1. To safeguard Cumulus’ management and operations via the continuation of its current Secretariat at Aalto and to choose a legal jurisdiction, Finland, that honors the association’s legacy
  2. To examine potential risks of the legal registration (e.g. financial and tax implications, Board membership residency requirements, Board members’ personal liabilities, etc.)
  3. To ensure the amendments of the association’s statutes comply with legal registration in Finland, and do not introduce any changes to the mission, values, and aims of Cumulus, nor to its fundamental democratic governance and decision-making by all members via the General Assembly

Member Engagement

Leading up to the Amended Statutes approved for Registration in the General Assembly of June 2022, CEB VII designed a six-month participatory process for members to be informed of the registration process and to contribute questions and feedback.

As a result, members were invited to weigh in on the registration process during the following touchpoints:

  • 3 Open Member Town Halls invited broad member participation: two in December 2021 and one in February 2022 were recorded and made available to all registered members. Participation in each session accounted for approximately 19% percent and 20% of the total Cumulus membership for each session.
  • The Board registration sub-committee developed a comprehensive Q+A document to address critical registration issues based on questions and concerns by members.
  • An Extraordinary General Assembly (EGA) was convened in April 5. The EGA was planned around registration. Members were asked for two votes: 1) to vote on the registration in Finland and 2) to vote on the approval of amended statutes to comply with Finnish law. The April EGA approved the registration jurisdiction of Finland by majority vote. It failed to reach the ⅔ of quorum approval required to accept the first draft of the Amended Statutes proposed.
  • Post EGA, the Board put in place an actionable plan forward to create more co-creation touch points for members to offer feedback and have questions clarified with Legal Counsel. The inputs from this process informed the revised draft of the Amended Statutes that members approved in the GA of June 2022.

Towards Registration

The June 2022 General Assembly culminated the critical process of the Amendment of the Statutes for registration. The GA approved the Statutes with the necessary 2/3 quorum vote. This GA decision paves the way for the legal registration of Cumulus to take place.

The registration will guarantee the Association’s smooth transition as legal body that will keep its management with the Secretariat team based at Aalto University, the ongoing university host of Cumulus through 2025.

Aalto University and Aalto ARTS are delighted to reinstate our will to host the Secretariat till the end of 2025, pending negotiations, which we expressed in 2019.

When starting the negotiations for a renewed service agreement between Cumulus and Aalto, it became apparent that the current legal structure of Cumulus– with regard to Cumulus’s global network and expanded financial operations – is problematic for both parties. For this reason, Aalto recognized that an independent registration is necessary before signing the new service agreement.

In my understanding, the Executive Board and the Secretary-General have carried out the preparation for this transformation seriously, respectfully, and with full responsibility for the Association.

Aalto University and Aalto ARTS sincerely hope that members accept the modified amendments of the statutes that will be presented in the General Assembly in June to enable the signing of the new agreement between Aalto and Cumulus.
