Overview

In this workshop, we will first give you a sneak preview of the brand-new Cumulus Design Competency Resource* which aims to become a global platform for design teachers to share their best student ‘Learning Experiences’.

Then we invite you to share your stories about the Learning Experiences you conceived for your design class or studio and how they inspired and enabled students to grow their competencies in design.

Working in small groups, we’ll then tag your stories using the Design Competency Resource, to make your unique learning experiences accessible, shareable and findable for the global Cumulus Community of design educators.

*AADTE, Cumulus and DCF have been working on the creation of the Design Competency Resource over the past three years, funded by a Cumulus grant.

Workshop Description

The AADTE Working group is about to launch a website highlighting the competencies that makes being a designer so special as a shared resource for design teachers around the world. Before its official launch during Cumulus Antwerp in 2023 we need you to read this and join us in Detroit.

Before you take off….
While you are getting packed your suitcases to get to the Cumulus conference in Detroit, you’ll be mentally preparing for deep, inspiring and mind-bending paper presentations and discussions.

For a week, you won’t be teaching students or managing your departments. The everyday interactions with design students in the classroom or design studio are getting more distant on your back mirror.

While the view forward at the broad, deep and far-reaching landscape of research is inspiring, we feel that taking a better look at the everyday of teaching provides a similar wealth of insight, if we take the effort. To quote Goethe, ‘The hardest thing to see is what is in front of your eyes’.

This AADTE working group session will aim the lens of inquiry at what is usually right in front of your eyes in the classroom, and in the design studio. What’s so special about teaching design? What kinds of learning experiences are involved? Can you identify the unique design competencies that are being taught?

For example
We feel that the most important and strategic things in design that are so valuable in today’s discourses about design thinking are situated and acquired in learning experiences of students in the context of everyday teaching. For example, in model / figure drawing, not only do we acquire skills like observation, drawing and composition but also learn to ‘think spatially’, to ‘see relationships’ or even learn to empathize. In another example, by asking students to work in small groups, with one of the students managing the process, all students learn about collaboration, and some learn about managing a project.

What we are looking for
What are your best stories about creating learning experiences in design? What are the most valuable learning experiences you can share beyond the walls of your own classroom or studio? How do these experiences help students to grow? What are some of the higher-level design competencies that are situated and acquired? Could you inspire colleague teachers around the world? We would love to capture some of this knowledge and experience.

We’re not looking for theories on how design thinking gets developed, but looking for the everyday moments in the classroom, where students are working on project work, either alone, in groups, in the class, in a lab or in a studio…

The workshop
In the workshop we’ll invite you first to describe a learning experience you set up for students. You could present in a hands-on way how you prepare it, how the learning experience plays out, the activities the students engage in (both in the studio and in their own time) and how discussion, sharing, and feedback occur. And anything else you feel is important.

We have prepared a list of possible learnings (design competencies) with their definitions. These competencies will be used as tags so other teachers can find the learning experiences; they’re interested in on the website/shared resource we’re creating.

Post workshop
We’d like to publish the learning experiences you presented in this workshop (with your credentials off course) on the website/resource we’re creating, so that at Cumulus Antwerp we can celebrate the rich diversity, depth and value of everyday teaching.

How we got to here…
At Cumulus Hong Kong (2016), Pr. Job Rutgers from OCADU in Toronto began a partnership with Dr. John Fass and Mo Ling Chui from UAL’s London College of Communication (LCC). This partnership applies design thinking to the creation of design pedagogy and design curriculum. Since then, the group presented workshops and papers on Design + Art Competencies at Cumulus conferences in Kolding and in Paris. In 2018 it organized a large workshop at AIGA in Minneapolis and presented a paper for the Design Research Society Conference in Limerick, Ireland.

At Cumulus Paris we agreed with Cumulus conference organizers (Luisa Collina and Martti Raevaara) to integrate the format of the competency workshop to date into the pedagogy working group, to create an annual platform to summarize and synthesize findings on art + design competencies. Prior to COVID, during Cumulus Rovaniemi, we created a team of ‘rapporteurs’ to create an overview of the competencies being implied within the broad array of presentations and papers. Now at Cumulus Detroit, we again pick up the collaborative conversation, and would love to see you there!

We are: Design Competency Futures
The facilitators of this workshop (Rutgers, Fass) are founders of the Design Competency Futures initiative. As design educators and researchers, we have seen how the discourse on design thinking has popularized design far beyond the profession of design.

But how do design students acquire their valuable competencies? To find out, at conferences around the world we facilitate workshops with leading designers, design educators and design administrators and co-investigate, co-create future proof design competencies. Cumulus Antwerp 2023: Connectivity and Creativity in times of Conflict
April 12-15, 2023 Antwerp, Belgium

Society is being constantly challenged by conflict (global/local), contradiction and an ever changing perspective by non-neutral roles of technology and organisations. We invite the Cumulus community, designers, artists, and educators to investigate how culture and creative industry can offer resilience, consolation, and innovation models on human scale.

With a legacy of conflict, the city of Antwerp represents an economic and cultural hive of activity. Concepts from avant-garde to conformism fashion, product design and new media have flourished in Antwerp.

Aligned with the vision of Cumulus Association, and revigorated with the notion that new movements can be shaped in grassroots settings, the aim of the Conference is to map principles research and education in design and highlight novel directions.

The conference is actively looking for new insights and critical reflections on the value of Connectivity and Creativity in times of Conflict, reflected in these conference tracks:

Nature positive/Design for Transformation
• Systemic & strategic problem solving
• The concept of abundance
• Decoupling innovation from the notion of “new”
• Biophilic design
• Resilience in fashion and interior design

Digital futures/Hybrid reality
• Metaverse / VR & AI
• Digital fabrication
• Craftmanship
• Smart cities
• Digital arts
• Cyber- and posthumanism

Handle with care/Inclusivity
• Inclusive Design
• Super-diversity
• Social Spaces
• Critical heritage, conservation and restoration

METHOD/ART
• Uncertainty in method and practice
• Ecological strategies
• Cultural activism
• Participatory practices
• Pedagogical projects

This call is for anyone wishing to test an idea or to get early feedback on a proposal. Contribute your paper, visual paper, poster, workshop, lecture/performance or poster/installation.

The conference will be held in Antwerp between 12-15 April 2023.
Hosted by the Faculty of Design Sciences of the University of Antwerp in close collaboration with the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. Located in the medieval city centre, there will be plenty of opportunity to connect and create.

Submit your contribution – deadline 11 November 2022

General Assembly

The General Assembly or “GA” is the association’s highest shared governance authority and is constituted by representatives of its full member institutions

Cumulus full-members are expected to send their official representative (s) to attend the General Assembly on an annual basis. This is an opportunity for members to approve the main strategic objectives recommended by the President and Executive Board, approve the association’s annual budget, and endorse new institutional members.

Held annually in the 1st quarter of the calendar year, “extraordinary” sessions are held when the association has critical needs for members to vote.

Next General Assembly

May 16, 2024 – Hybrid

Our community will be meeting next in the first quarter of 2024 online and on-site in Budapest, Hungary.

Cumulus Legal Registration

Why the Time is Now

After 30 years of continued growth and success as an unregistered association under the legal framework of its founding host institution, Aalto University, Cumulus is becoming a legally registered association in Finland.

Registration Process & Member Engagement

The legal registration of Cumulus represents an important and necessary milestone. As the association continues to mature into a global academic entity, the registration will bring new opportunities for Cumulus to serve its members.

As a registered association, Cumulus will keep upholding its mission: to be a dynamic forum for knowledge exchange and best practices and a committed advocate for the positive role of designers and artists in shaping a better world.

Registration Process

The legal registration process for Cumulus has required deliberate study, legal consultation and multi-stakeholder member engagement.

Initiated in 2021 and managed by CEB VII, the research and necessary work to prepare the registration culminated with the General Assembly of June 2022 when Cumulus members adopted the Association’s new Amended Statutes required by Finnish Law for Cumulus to register in Finland.

The following priorities guided the consultative work that CEB VII carried out to help transition the Association to legal status:

  1. To safeguard Cumulus’ management and operations via the continuation of its current Secretariat at Aalto and to choose a legal jurisdiction, Finland, that honors the association’s legacy
  2. To examine potential risks of the legal registration (e.g. financial and tax implications, Board membership residency requirements, Board members’ personal liabilities, etc.)
  3. To ensure the amendments of the association’s statutes comply with legal registration in Finland, and do not introduce any changes to the mission, values, and aims of Cumulus, nor to its fundamental democratic governance and decision-making by all members via the General Assembly

Member Engagement

Leading up to the Amended Statutes approved for Registration in the General Assembly of June 2022, CEB VII designed a six-month participatory process for members to be informed of the registration process and to contribute questions and feedback.

As a result, members were invited to weigh in on the registration process during the following touchpoints:

  • 3 Open Member Town Halls invited broad member participation: two in December 2021 and one in February 2022 were recorded and made available to all registered members. Participation in each session accounted for approximately 19% percent and 20% of the total Cumulus membership for each session.
  • The Board registration sub-committee developed a comprehensive Q+A document to address critical registration issues based on questions and concerns by members.
  • An Extraordinary General Assembly (EGA) was convened in April 5. The EGA was planned around registration. Members were asked for two votes: 1) to vote on the registration in Finland and 2) to vote on the approval of amended statutes to comply with Finnish law. The April EGA approved the registration jurisdiction of Finland by majority vote. It failed to reach the ⅔ of quorum approval required to accept the first draft of the Amended Statutes proposed.
  • Post EGA, the Board put in place an actionable plan forward to create more co-creation touch points for members to offer feedback and have questions clarified with Legal Counsel. The inputs from this process informed the revised draft of the Amended Statutes that members approved in the GA of June 2022.

Towards Registration

The June 2022 General Assembly culminated the critical process of the Amendment of the Statutes for registration. The GA approved the Statutes with the necessary 2/3 quorum vote. This GA decision paves the way for the legal registration of Cumulus to take place.

The registration will guarantee the Association’s smooth transition as legal body that will keep its management with the Secretariat team based at Aalto University, the ongoing university host of Cumulus through 2025.

Aalto University and Aalto ARTS are delighted to reinstate our will to host the Secretariat till the end of 2025, pending negotiations, which we expressed in 2019.

When starting the negotiations for a renewed service agreement between Cumulus and Aalto, it became apparent that the current legal structure of Cumulus– with regard to Cumulus’s global network and expanded financial operations – is problematic for both parties. For this reason, Aalto recognized that an independent registration is necessary before signing the new service agreement.

In my understanding, the Executive Board and the Secretary-General have carried out the preparation for this transformation seriously, respectfully, and with full responsibility for the Association.

Aalto University and Aalto ARTS sincerely hope that members accept the modified amendments of the statutes that will be presented in the General Assembly in June to enable the signing of the new agreement between Aalto and Cumulus.

Cumulus PhD Network

The program provides a platform where Ph.D. coordinators, faculty, and the Cumulus doctoral student community come together to collaborate and further knowledge exchange among peers.
An emerging initiative that holds unique promise
Launched in December 2020 with a member survey circulated by the Cumulus Secretariat to solicit participation and expressions of interest from our association’s community, the Cumulus Ph.D. network aims to develop a community of practice among Cumulus member institutions running doctoral programs and seeking to share learnings and opportunities.

An additional objective for the network is to create a dynamic space for Ph.D. candidates to share their research and leverage the vast global knowledge base of the Cumulus global academic community.

Participating Member feedback has already identified preliminary areas of interest that the Network will explore and further define. Emerging ideas for possible areas of emphasis include:

  • Harnessing the role of Cumulus as a connector to establish joint programs and co-supervision opportunities between doctoral programs between various member universities
  • Exploring peer-to-peer exchange and collaboration through Ph.D. seminars at Cumulus conferences and other online convenings dedicated to doctoral candidates’ research
  • Fostering collaboration among Ph.D. supervisors and amplifying access to share international resources and insights about funding sources and more

Food Think Tank investigates a number of critical questions for designers: how can design influence our new eating habits and protect the planet’s natural resources and work, especially with the rising global concern on how to feed the planet now and into 2050? Similar to design, food is a common language that brings people and cultures together, each with a different relationship to food preferences and taboos.

The working group aims to challenge traditional ideas about food products and consumption to look into and examine what are the new protein transitions, and how we can minimize food waste. We are calling food design labs and designers, in general, to contribute to this working group to work towards a unified global vision and to explore how we can design the present to ensure a better future.

Food Think Tank focuses on the following topics:

  • The role of designers to protect food ecosystems and natural resources
  • Designing new food systems, healthy living, ecological products, and brands
  • The role of technology in food production and consumption
  • Quality food with health benefits to developed and under-developed countries
  • Food security and consumption
  • The link between designers, education, and the food industry (disciplinary and cultural perspective)
  • Any other related topic proposed by working group members
