Mission Statement
The Mission of the School of lndustrial Design is to provide a quality human-centered design education that focuses on a range of creative, research, aesthetic, technological problem-solving skills, and assistive activities, which allow our students to be highly competitive in the industrial design marketplace.
International Role
The School of Industrial Design engages in interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary product design activities on the Georgia Tech campuses (Atlanta main campus, Europe, and Shenzhen), and with local, national, and international industries. The School of Industrial Design has international education partnerships with 17 schools in Australia, Europe, Asia, and South America.
National Role
Our program distinguishes itself from other industrial design programs in the U.S. through an interdisciplinary curriculum that embraces design, engineering, technology, and business. Our sequenced, studio-based curriculum encourages innovation fueled by STEM skills.
Main Focus
Industrial design at Georgia Tech aims to fortify the designer’s role in humanizing connections between people and technology. As part of a top-ranked research institute, our BSID and MID programs offer a human-entered and evidence-based approach to design and valuable experiential learning opportunities.
Faculties and Departments
The Georgia Institute of Technology is a public research university established by the state of Georgia in Atlanta in 1885 and is committed to developing leaders who advance technology and improve the human condition. Georgia Tech has six colleges and 29 schools focusing on Business, Computing, Design, Engineering, Liberal Arts, and Sciences. The Institute is an innovative intellectual environment with more than 8,300 employees that include over 1,050 instructional staff and 2,700 research staff. 43,859 students enrolled at Georgia Tech in the fall of 2021, with 17,461 undergraduates and 26,398 graduate students.
The School of Industrial Design is one of five academic units in the College of Design. The College has a mission to foster fosters innovators in design, research, and technology who create culturally relevant and socially responsible places, products, and experiences
Georgia Tech's role as a major U.S. research institution helps to define the unique character of the Industrial Design Program in the Institute and College of Design. The School of Industrial Design benefits from an intellectual and entrepreneurial climate of experimentation, exploration, and discovery that has infused the School of Industrial Design with a spirit of creative problem-solving.
Georgia Tech’s School of Industrial Design distinguishes itself through its commitment to the end-user and its multidisciplinary approach to problem-solving. Through rapid prototype iteration and a focus on people, industrial design students gain valuable practice in empathetic design. We combine Georgia Tech's rigorous scientific approach with our design traditions of free-wheeling conceptual development. We have access to more than 100 research centers, labs, and facilities across campus, including the College of Design’s 13,000-square-foot fabrication shop.
The School of Industrial Design at Georgia Tech takes full advantage of the fact that our university is a Tier 1 research institute. We teach our students, from undergraduate to doctoral, to integrate the technologies and engineering expertise surrounding them with user-centered design.
Bachelor Level Programs
We offer a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design. Our program distinguishes itself from other industrial design programs in the U.S. through an interdisciplinary curriculum that embraces design, engineering, and business. Our sequenced, studio-based curriculum encourages innovation fueled by STEM skills. Specialized courses covering topics like human factors, sustainability, materials, and research methods prepare students with the skill set to engage in industry-sponsored studio projects. As juniors and seniors, industrial design students have the option to take more specialized courses and concentrate their final studies in the areas of product design and innovation, health, and universal design, or UX and service design.
Master Level Programs
For the Master of Industrial Design (MID), comprehensive research is at the core of this program, which focuses on the informed design of products and highly adaptable systems. Through experimentation and state-of-the-art technologies, this program teaches students to become design strategists with a mature level of design execution. The MID program teaches the skills and perspectives needed for an increasingly interconnected industry. Our studios teach design thinking through empathy, creativity, and user-experience centered research. In a collaborative environment, students learn to validate their ideas, build compelling design stories, and uncover new market opportunities. Our graduates in the industry strive to quantify the user’s experience beyond tangibility, a trend that has increased the value of industrial designers across industries. Our students are uniquely positioned to enter many industries, including business/strategy/consulting, higher education, engineering, research, marketing, and computer science; most commonly through careers in UX/UI, product design, service design, organizational design, interaction design, and strategy.
The Master of Science in Human-Computer Interaction (MS-HCI) is a unique interdisciplinary program offered collaboratively by four separate schools at Georgia Tech: Interactive Computing; Literature, Media and Communication (LMC); Psychology; and Industrial Design. Broadly defined, this study strives to find the perfect relationship between humans and computers.
Research Activity and Main Areas
The School of Industrial Design at Georgia Tech is among the distinct preeminent design programs in the U.S. with access to the resources of a top-tier research university. Access to distinguished faculty and emerging technologies presents a highly favorable environment for discovery, innovation, and intellectual freedom. The MID program offers students the ability to work on sponsored projects and studios to explore a focus on Healthcare Innovation, Interactive Product Design, Product & System Innovation, and Service Design.
Doctorate Level Programs
The School of Industrial Design doctoral studies has operated under the Architecture Ph.D. program with an Industrial Design Specialization. We currently have a working group putting together a Ph.D. proposal to establish a dedicated Ph.D. in Industrial Design in a few years
